When a well demands more than a conventional unit can deliver, the Liberty Lift XL Long Stroke Pumping Unit gets the job done with fewer strokes and less wear
As wells mature and production methods evolve, operators often find themselves in a gap – initial high-volume lift methods like ESPs, gas lift and jet pumps are no longer the right fit, but conventional beam pumping units don’t yet have the capacity to handle moderate flow rates effectively. That continually widening grey area is exactly where the Liberty Lift XL Long Stroke Pumping Unit excels.
The XL provides an earlier, cost-effective transition from high-volume lift to longer-term rod pumping – particularly in deep, deviated, or high gas-to-liquid ratio wells. With more than 1,700 XL units installed globally and an average of 500+ rod pumps installed monthly, Liberty Lift brings proven field experience to every application.
The XL’s long, slow stroke gives the downhole pump more time to fill on every cycle, maximizing pump fillage while dramatically reducing the number of cycles. Fewer cycles mean less rod and tubing wear, fewer workovers, lower OPEX, and extended equipment life – all while producing more fluid per stroke than a conventional unit can achieve.
For operators transitioning from ESP, gas lift or jet pump installations as initial production rates begin to decline, the XL bridges the gap. It moves more fluid per stroke than any conventional unit, making it the ideal solution for wells still producing at rates that would overwhelm standard rod lift equipment.
Long, slow strokes reduce overall pumping cycles, which directly translates to less rod and tubing wear in deviated wellbores. The XL's constant-velocity stroke minimizes the dynamic loading that causes premature rod failures in high-angle wells, keeping wells on production longer and workovers less frequent.
When structural capacity requirements exceed or push the limits of conventional pumping units, the XL delivers. Its higher peak polished rod load rating supports larger rod string tapers and larger pump sizes needed to effectively lift fluids from significant depth.
The XL is a rugged, stationary vertical structure that uses a gear reducer to operate a lower sprocket connected to a chain and an internal sliding traversing mechanism. This mechanism drives the vertical and horizontal movement of a counterweight box inside the tower. The counterweight connects to a heavy-duty woven load belt, which connects to the sucker rod string and downhole pump.
The result is a stroke length of up to 416 inches – the longest commercially available stroke length in the industry – operating at a constant velocity with as few as half the cycles of a comparable conventional pumping unit.

The XL Long Stroke Pumping Unit is designed to work seamlessly with Liberty Lift’s full RRL automation portfolio. The Unit Sentry – standard on every XL unit provides real-time operational monitoring, fault protection and emergency shutdown capability. For operators who want full-system visibility and advanced optimization, the Ken Well Manager integrates directly with the XL and its Unit Sentry, with no additional position sensor required.
Variable Speed Drive packages are highly recommended for XL applications. Zone speed control during the stroke allows for better gas separation, higher pump volume efficiency and the ability to adapt to changing reservoir conditions – all while managing energy costs.
